Criminal investigation launched in prison scandal

The Nebraska prisons department has suspended some department workers who are facing discipline in the inmate sentencing scandal. Internal emails showed officials knew sentences were being calculated incorrectly for hundreds of prisoners and didn't correct the problem. That's Gov. Dave Heineman who joined Attorney General Jon Bruning for a news a conference today to say that the Nebraska State Patrol is now conducting a criminal investigation. Attorney General Jon Bruning says throughout this process transparency will be the key to regaining public trust. Nearly 600 sentences had to be recalculated after the problem was discovered earlier this summer. Heineman had advice for members of the State Legislature to help prevent these issues from occurring again. Most of the sentences that had to be extended were for inmates still in prison, but dozens of prisoners had to be tracked down after being released early.
