Speaking of water, the EPA says it just wants to clarify protection for the upstream waters that are vital to downstream communities. Meanwhile Nebraska farm and ranch groups say it's a power grab. Common Sense Nebraska kicked off its Ditch the Rule campaign this week as Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson claims the EPA wants to regulate farm ponds, creeks, and ditches, too. Under the proposal, the coalition says basic farming and ranching activities would require permits when those water features are present. Nebraska Cattlemen Vice President Barb Cooksley of worries those new regulations and permits will be costly. Nebraska U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns and Deb Fischer say it's not just the ag industry that'll be affected by the new rule. They penned a letter to the head of the EPA saying plaintiffs claim local fireworks displays violate the Clean Water Act, they fear it'll cause cities and towns to have to cancel future celebrations.
